The Reflection Story

The Reflection

True story of the photo that has been forwarded around the world.

July 18th, 2017

Waddington, NY

It was my 2nd or 3rd time in Waddington, my roommates Paul Elias and Shaw Grigsby were staying in town near the weigh in, I was staying a few miles out of town in a very nice Craftsman style home with some friends.

After every weigh-in Paul, Shaw and I would go have dinner together then we would come back to the house they were staying in talk some, goof around some…same kind of stuff we did for over 5 years of rooming together.

On one of those nights when the sun was setting, I saw how the trees near the church would reflect off the church window, thought it would look cool, got my camera out of my truck and walked over a couple of yards, lined up the shot and hit the button…

…nothing…

…weird, try it again, hit the shutter button and…

…nothing.

Figured it was the battery, went to the truck got a new charged battery, put it in the camera and walked back to the same spot and hit the button…

…nothing.

And I was losing light, and my patience.

So, I moved over some to catch what was left of the reflection, hit the button and…

…bang…bang…bang…

…three shots in a row.

Huh.

That’s never happened before, but at least I got the shot, I think.

Shaw was already in the house when I came back, he was sitting at the kitchen table, so I sat next to him and put the camera up on the table and started to scroll through the shots, looking at them in the viewfinder on the back.

Then.

“Hey Shaw, look at this, what the hell is this.”

And I turned the camera so he could see.

He looked, looked again, got close and looked, then turned to me and said exactly this:

“That’s Jesus.”

To be honest I’m not a very religious guy, but I do sometimes see what looks like to be a face on the window even if it is just the reflection of trees.

The photo you are looking at has not been touched or fooled with in any way.

It is as shot.

I’ve also blown it up to 11 x 14 and framed it, again no trickery involved.

Sometimes I see a face looking downwards.

Sometimes I don’t.

In my head I know it to be reflection of trees on a church window.

But then again…

…then again…

Bottom Line:  I am not a religious guy, non believe, but then again…

…I aimed my camera at the reflection of trees at sunrise on a church window…

…where there was no face…

…and yet…

…in the 3 photos I took…

…there seems to be a…

…face…

…looking down at me…

…and us.
